Frequently asked questions

Wire mesh is usually designated by a mesh number. This number indicates the number of openings (meshes) per 25.4 mm, measured from the center of the first wire to the center of the next wire after 25.4 mm.
Wire diameter is the thickness of the wire used.
Mesh size refers to the distance between two wires. The formula for this is as follows:
25.4 / mesh number – wire thickness = mesh size. Example below with mesh 10 and a wire diameter of 0.55 mm
25.4 / 10 – 0.55 = 1.99 mm mesh size

The theoretical weight of woven mesh can be calculated using the following formula:
wire thickness in mm x wire thickness in mm x mesh number x 0.5 = weight per m2
Example: mesh number 10, wire thickness 0.55 mm weighs: 0.55 x 0.55 x 10 x 0.5 = 1.51 kg per m2

The open area percentage is the percentage of open surface area relative to the wire diameter.
When the mesh size and wire thickness are known, the open area percentage can be calculated as follows.
Open area percentage = mesh size ² / (mesh size + wire diameter) ² x 100 See the example below for mesh 10, mesh size 1.99 mm, and 0.55 mm wire.
1.99 ² / (1.99 + 0.55) ² x 100 = 61.38%

We have fabric with mesh sizes ranging from 25.4 mm to 0.020 mm*.
The range of wire diameters used is between 3.4 mm and 0.020 mm.

*Tressa mesh fabrics are not included here. These have an even finer filter range, which means that mesh size is no longer applicable.

The mesh sizes range from 100 mm to 0.50 mm*.
The wire diameters used range from 2.45 mm to 0.50 mm.
