Past and future intertwined

The rich history of Metaalgaasweverij Dinxperlo (now known as Royal Dinxperlo) and the Hallen family dates back to the beginning of the last century. Like his father Gustav, August Hallen from Dinxperlo is a certified coppersmith. In 1917, he began construction of a factory in Doetinchem. Before he even started working there, he sold the building. An interesting detail: in 1933, tire manufacturer Vredestein moved into this factory.

Drive for expansion

After working from Suderwick for a short time, August Hallen builds a new office building with a weaving and dyeing mill behind it on Anholtseweg in Dinxperlo. He focuses primarily on the production of fly screen in blue and green. For years, hard wire was woven in two shifts using a ring spool. Metaalgaasweverij sold the fly screen to hardware stores. The office was enlarged, a warehouse was built, and Metaalgaas Twente in Hengelo was taken over. The heavy DL and DM weaving machines were put into use in Dinxperlo. Later, the fine looms followed.

New weaving mill and wire drawing mill

A new weaving mill is being built on Weverstraat in Dinxperlo. A storage facility will be built behind the wire drawing mill. The wire drawing mill is being expanded with two wire drawing machines and an annealing furnace. The construction of ten Alberts wire drawing machines (in-house) makes it possible to draw the wire for fly screen mesh in-house. This drawing mill is needed for the weaving mill and later also for the welding shop.

The war years

In 1941, a carpentry workshop was built for Æ’ 2,600. No further additions were made during the turbulent war years. Immediately after the war, Metaalgaasweverij started a filter department.

In the post-war years, it was difficult to sell large quantities of wire mesh. However, Metaalgaasweverij expanded with a galvanizing plant, a metalworking shop, a welding shop, a fine weaving shop, and a plastic weaving shop. The Jaeger wire mesh welding machines that were purchased enabled Metaalgaasweverij to offer a wider range of wire mesh products. Around 1950, there were about 104 people working there.

Past and future intertwined

In the 1950s, Metaalgaasweverij started producing tensioned edges for state mines and road construction. During this period, the first mud screens for the oil industry were also produced. At the end of 1960, Metaalgaasweverij wanted to expand and was looking for new premises. These were found on Industriestraat in Dinxperlo. The entire plastic weaving mill moved here. To meet the demand for semi-finished products, Metaalgaasweverij purchased material processing machines, including a strip and piece cutting machine, a spot and seam welding machine, and an eccentric press.

Metal mesh weaving mill starts epoxy coating; protecting, embellishing, and reinforcing mesh by applying an epoxy coating, which is unique for the wire weaving mill at that time. The purchased Jaeggli weaving machines with bobbin and top stroke start the production of polyethylene and fiber wire fly screens.

Innovations continued to follow each other in rapid succession in the 1980s. The purchase of a wire gripper machine and a so-called stretching table are proof of this. The latter enables Metaalgaasweverij to make the mesh stronger and flatter. Whereas previously only Jeager machines were purchased, in the 1980s and 1990s Italian machines of very high quality were added. Machines were also developed and built in-house.

In 1992, Metaalgaasweverij wove a 500-mesh fabric for the first time. As Metaalgaasweverij served more and more customers in the food industry, requirements and standards were raised. The ultrasonic cleaning machine ensured perfect cleaning, and the fiber weaving mill was expanded with a number of machines from Miami

Since decorative mesh has become a trend since the turn of the millennium, Metaalgaasweverij is installing a new machine with a width of three meters.

In almost a hundred years, Metaalgaasweverij’s activities have expanded enormously. Thousands of types of mesh have been developed and produced and are supplied worldwide. The machinery offers an enormous variety of weaving looms. This allows us to produce everything from very fine mesh with 1,300 hair-thin wires per centimeter to very coarse mesh with openings of, for example, 5 cm and 4 mm thick. After weaving, many mesh specifications undergo one or more finishing processes that we carry out in-house. With the right after-treatment, they are optimally suited for their specific application.

2017, the anniversary year! 100 years of Royal Dinxperlo and 100 years of craftsmanship were celebrated together with staff, customers, and business relations. This included a staff trip to Italy and an anniversary weekend with a staff party, open day, and evening party with customers and business relations. This year, we looked back on the past 100 years of craftsmanship and, of course, expressed our ambitions for the next 100 years!
