The challenge in hardboard production

During the wet production process, the wood fibre pulp contains a significant amount of water. Manufacturers must drain this water in a controlled manner whilst compressing the fibres into a solid board under heat and pressure. If the water is not drained evenly, this can affect the structure and quality of the hardboard.

In addition, the metal mesh is repeatedly subjected to mechanical stress during the production process. It is therefore essential that the mesh apertures, wire diameters and weave structure remain consistent across the entire width. Only then can a uniform mesh pattern be achieved and the hardboard sheets maintain a consistent quality.

The role of metal mesh

During the pressing process, the woven metal mesh forms the supporting base for the wet wood fibres. Water then drains out of the material through the openings in the mesh. At the same time, the mesh holds the wood fibres in place, allowing the press to mould them into a solid board under pressure.

During this process, the structure of the mesh leaves a visible pattern on one side of the hardboard panel. This results in what is known as S1S hardboard: a panel with one smooth side and one side featuring a distinctive pattern. This type of hardboard is widely used, for example, for cupboard back panels and other interior and structural applications.

Why choose woven hardboard mesh?

Hardboard production requires metal mesh that combines good water drainage with sufficient stability and a consistent weave structure. That is why Royal Dinxperlo manufactures hardboard mesh in AISI 304L stainless steel and bright iron.

Thanks to the precisely manufactured mesh apertures, water can drain evenly from the wood fibre mass. At the same time, the woven structure provides sufficient support during pressing. Furthermore, consistent dimensions ensure an even mesh pattern and, consequently, a recognisable and reproducible end product.
